an International School for Kimberley

a Tight, Two-Year Timeline

In early October, Purcell International Education co-founder Duncan MacLeod and Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick headed to China seeking investors for a new international school in Kimberley. The day after their return, MacLeod held a small  press conference to report on the trip and to explain why they went. Below is a summary of their presentation.

As with any effort to change the future, a healthy skepticism is appropriate. But the dream now appears to be achievable and potentially a major contributor to Kimberley's long-term well-being.

In his discussion of the economic prospects for the school, Mr. MacLeod stated that the economic benefit to British Columbia of international education is about $3.5 billion per year and also suggested that we verify that number. A quick internet search yielded a BC government estimate in 2014 of  $2.14 billion. A plausible 11% per year increase would lead to roughly his estimate.

[We did not expect to record any of the presentation but found more than enough substance to justify sharing this with you. The result is that the video and, particulary, the audio quality is below our usual standards for which we apologize.]

UPDATE: On Friday, October 19, there will be a public information session about the proposed international school. The event will be held at Trickle Creek Lodge from 7 to 9 PM in the Purcell Room. More information here.
